Mission statement:

League for Life aims to enhance learning outcomes for school communities by harnessing the motivational power of sport- in particular rugby league and associated principles.

The Program:

League for Life began in 2007 with the pilot League for Life Inclusive Curriculum Program at Robina SHS. This program is secondary based and is a comprehensive approach to schooling that uses relevant contextual experiences, current student interests, rugby league, associated principles and essential life skills as the vehicle to drive curriculum. The program runs from Year 9 to 12 and combines curriculum, literacy, numeracy, ICT, life skills, fitness, team sport, personal development and enterprise. In 2008 three Gold Coast schools- Robina SHS, Elanora SHS and Nerang SHS and Patrician Brothers Blacktown in Sydney have commenced the program.

The "Playing for Success" Sport Club Program is based on the successful UK "Playing for Success" model and commenced in 2008. It is a supportive approach to mainstream schooling for primary and secondary school students that uses current student interests, rugby league and associated principles as the means to engage students. Sport Club runs for 2 hours a week for a minimum of a term and supports school curriculum, improves literacy, numeracy, ICT skills and fitness, and focuses on personal development and self esteem. Robina SHS Yr 8 students and feeder primary schools are involved in Sport Club.

The Nalinah Balin Indigenous Youth Project commenced in 2008 and utilises the existing infrastructure of the League for Life inclusive curriculum program. It targets Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students whom would benefit from incentives based activities that are designed to improve attendance and engagement at school. This project involves secondary schools on the Gold Coast. (For further information about the 3 programs see Programs above).

League for Life Teacher Receives National Award

We are proud to announce that Robina SHS senior Mathematics teacher, Graham Herlihy, was amongst the winners at the 2008 Australian Government National Awards for Quality Schooling held in Canberra. The awards recognise the quality of teachers and raise awareness of the important work of teachers and schools. Graham was nominated in the 'Excellence By A Teacher' category. Graham has had great success in re-engaging students in learning through the League For Life Program at Robina State High School. His innovative approach has been highly successful in improving academic and behavioural outcomes for students. Graham's commitment has greatly assisted students to achieve results beyond their expectations and experience success in the classroom and on the sporting field.

In 2007, Graham was named Gold Coast Teacher of the Year. This recent award is further testimony to Graham's significant contribution to education.
